transformer house Marine Dr.
This house is a once in a lifetime house. The client came to us without knowing what they wanted. They gave us carte blanche and free rein. Their only guidance … design a house and garden for our son.
Their son has a number of conditions that culminate in a no outdoor policy in order to ensure his utmost care and safety. And his mom was his biggest champion! His favourite thing in the world is Gundam, so that became our inspiration.
It was our deepest honour and greatest challenge to create a landscape that was never going to be traversed. We designed a landscape that was only ever going to be viewed from inside the house. So the house was his Gundam cockpit and the landscape was his armour and figurine extension of his self-expression.
Every line from the house was extended into the landscape to create unity and an extension from his central locale seamlessly flowing from paving pattern to garden bed and frame. Sailor Moon was the inspiration for the tiered concrete framed landscape and waterfall in the back yard. As it turns out, his mom’s favourite thing is Sailor Moon. The landscape evolved into a bold graphic and dynamic flow of landscape elements that served the viewing purpose and intention while serving our pollinator population.
This design was awarded a Georgie Award 2019.
